Presented and produced by Seán Delaney In this programme I spoke to Dr. John Harris about his role as a special advisor to three ministers for education in the 1980s: John Boland, Gemma Hussey and Patrick Cooney. The occasion was the announcement by Minister for Education, Ruairí Quinn, that John Walshe, Education Editor of the Irish Independent was to be his special advisor. Dr. John Harris also spent time as Principal of three schools: Newpark Comprehensive, Sandford Park and Wesley College.

Presented and produced by Barry Hennessy and Seán Delaney In this programme Barry spoke to education spokespersons from three of the main political parties: Fergus O'Dowd of Fine Gael, Paul Gogarty of the Green Party and Ruairí Quinn of the Labour Party. They were all attending the special delegate conference organised by the Irish National Teachers' Organisation. Spokespersons from Fianna Fáil and Sinn Féin were invited to be on the programme but to no avail.

In this programme Brian Mooney who is a contributor to Education Matters and the Education Matters Yearbook looked back at some of the key events in education during 2010. These included disappointing PISA results, bonus CAO points for Maths, Grade inflation, higher education reform, the Croke Park agreement, reform of the VECs, problems with FÁS courses and school patronage. 2010 also saw a new Minister for Education and a name-change for the Department.
Barry Hennessy looked ahead to anticipate some of the stories that are likely to hit the education news headlines in 2011.

In this programme a panel of experts discusses the recently released results from PISA which showed a decline from 2000 to 2009 in the performance of Irish 15-year-olds students in reading and mathematical literacy. The experts are Dr. Jude Cosgrove, a research associate at the Educational Research Centre and a co-author of the Irish report on PISA; Professor Seán Ó Riain, professor of sociology at NUI Maynooth; Dr. Eithne Kennedy, a teacher educator in literacy in St. Patrick's College, Dublin and Jackie O' Callaghan, the Public Relations Officer of the National Parents' Council - Second Level.

He shared with listeners a maths problem to solve. Barry Hennessy spoke to Peter Mullan from the Irish National Teachers' Organisation about the Education (Amendment) Bill 2010 and allowing non-teachers to be employed as teachers in schools.
